Post subject:  Glicko Scoring results for all players

After much discussion in previous times, many MA players feel that the current scoring system does a great job of showing the experience of players, but does not necessarily show the level of skill they possess. One location that we discussed this in detail was:
http://massiveassault.com/forum/viewtop ... =2638#2638

So one choice was to go to a chess-like scoring system, where your score is based on how well you play against which opponents. If you continually beat the best players, you will have a good rating, regardless of the total games you've played. In this manner, good players that don't have the time to play as many games as some of the other players still have the chance to be rated high.

Qohnil built a web page intended to be a MA ladder, and so he chose the Glicko rating system to use for it. He wrote some code to score people based on games finished on the ladder site, but we took it one step further. With the help of the MA team, we aquired a list of all completed games, and with this list we have been able to score everyone based on the Glicko system. This is the link:

Basically there are two values that rate someone... the first value is an overall rating. In this case, it ranges from around 2500 to 800, and shows your overall score. The second number (RD) is a deviation factor, the lower the better. The deviation represents how accurate your rating probably is and will go down as you play more games. Some peoples scores may be inflated near the beginning if they get a few lucky wins, but you can know this from the RD.

You can go to Qohnil's ladder site (link in http://massiveassault.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=580 ) for more information on how the Glicko rating works.

Thanks to all that have made this scoring system possible! In my and others views, this is exactly what we wanted!

Is that page static or dynamic?

Static, but we can update it whenever we want to. We plan on updating it at least once a week.

Mind adding a "last updated" field, then?

Can you update it after the end of the beta test?

Thanks Deda

BTW, were the scores calculated as if the system had been running from day one? (i.e. I beat Tiger in the first game ever and our scores according to the default score, rather than Tiger being on 2300 because he has 50 wins under his belt at the present time).

To TRY and simplify my question, are the scores now the same as they would have been had the system been running from day one, or are they inaccurate in that respect in the interests of speed?

We have access to the list of all games completed since the very beginning of the database (before the initial release even). So yes, it is accurate by the order in which games were finished.

The Dev's scores aren't necessarily accurate, however. They had many test games recorded that are included in this system (for example, there is a player Vadim-test that was used by him for testing). If the web-master chooses to limit the game list to post-release this problem would be gone.

Oh, and I'll add a "last updated" title next time I update the list.

Can't update it too much more often then weekly, as it is a multiple-step process, and I am quite busy with the clan war.

Not a problem, though I'd love to see the Dev's use this system for MA, it really is interesting to view.

Do you know if Glicko v1 or v2 is used?

Not sure. Did you check Qohnil's faq on it?

Yeah, but I don't recall it saying.
